We all know how the Chennai is right now. With the congested traffic and buildings everywhere. This Chennai was not built in a decade, it took so many years of many people to bring life to the current Chennai. Let us see a old photos of Madras.

I have collected a few historic pictures of old Chennai from various sources. Just have a look and feel the breath of old images of Chennai. Those old roads, railways bridges and buildings, I hope you all will fall in love with this historic Madras.

1. Chennai Spencer

This photo was taken in 1962, which shows slow moving private buses near Spencer plaza. In those days, buying stuff from Spencer Plaza was considered as a special status.

2. Sportsman Thiru Kamarajar

Then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru. K. Kamarajar playing cricket in a stadium.

3. Testing Light Signal

This image was taken while testing an automatic signal in Mount Road near Spencer Plaza. This photo was taken in the year 1962.

4. Connecting Railway Bridges

This photo was taken while constructing railway bridge to connect Pallavan road with Chennai Central in Poonamallee Road. You can see the British officers walking on the bridge.

5. Gemini Bridge

This photo was taken in 1973 which shows Gemini Brdige on a sunny day in the month of May. The construction of the bridge was soon to be completed.

You can even see the traffic in those days.

6. First Tram vehicle

Mount road in 1895. Tram vehicle crossing by some people walking on road and someone riding the horse. First Tram transport was introduced in Chennai on 7th May 1895.

7. Swimming Pool

Children learning swimming happily in Anna swimming pool. You can see the Napier bridge behind the pool.

8. Shell Bunk

Shell company’s historic petrol bunk. Ofcourse, share auto is not new for Chennai. This photo was taken in 1920. You can see a small boy near the pole looking at the camera.

9. Hand Rickshaw

Hand rickshaw was banned on 2.6.1973. Then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi banned this considering this as inhumanity behavior. You can see the police directing the Rickshaw owners to leave their rickshaws.

10. Strict Rules for Cycles

Penalty for driving cycle without bell (horn) was strictly imposed and you can see the police holding the cycle of a person. Although there is a bell in this cycle 🙂 , we are not sure why the cycle was held.

11. Connecting Bridge of Rich and Poor People

Bridge was constructed over Buckingham Canal. This bridge connects the people on both sides. This photo was taken in 1971.

12. Esplanade Road, Chennai High Court

We can see very few vehicle and people in Esplanade road near High Court. You can see Chennai High Court towards left end. This photo was taken in 1905.

13. Stop Watch Go

You can the police man managing traffic near Triplicane Beach Road. You can also see the Standard car which was manufactured completely in Chennai.

14. The hard truth about hand rickshaws

You can see the man struggling to pull the hand rickshaw with two men.

15. Palm Tree Road

You can see palm trees in Bi-Crafts Road which was taken in 1890. Ameer Mahal was built towards west of this place. Ameer Mahal was constructed in Indo-Saracenic style in 1798, which has been the residence of the titular Nawab of Arcot and his family since 1876.
