2020 was all about disaster. From forest fires, floods to the king of disasters Covid-19. All the governments across the globe started locking down their borders. People inside their homes. And the first precautionary measure was to wash their hands regularly and wear masks.

Washing hands? Yes, we have been taught to do this since our elementary schools. But actually most of us never followed these properly. Not only this, there are a lot of examples where we have forgot maintaining our hygiene. It is a basic human nature to forget things or lowering our priorities.

Likewise, there are few basic habits which were designed by ancient civilizations to keep ourselves safe from viruses. One such civilization is Tamil Civilization. It belongs to southern part of India. Even now, the people of this civilization follow the lifestyle of their ancestors which are passed on to several generations.

These are not their habits, it was their lifestyle. Since last 5 decades, there has been tremendous westernization in this part of the country and many have forgotten their lifestyle.

Let us see how these ancestors lived their lifestyle and how those can still benefit us today.

1. They do not cook in a house for 14 days since someone's death. Why?

Whenever someone dies in your home, the viruses from the body may live for 14 days in the home. This is the reason the relatives of that family, cook food from their homes and feed them.

2. Do not touch

People who return from funerals or Saloon do not touch anything before they actually take bath. This is because they may be a carrier of the viruses and bath first before doing any task. Before entering home, they thoroughly wash their hands, legs and wash their face.

3. Take oil bath every week

Taking oil bath every week keeps our body cool and prevents us from cold and lung diseases.

4. Use clay, copper, bronze utensils for cooking and other regular usages

Science has proven that these materials are prone to prevent the viruses and increases nutritious values.

5. Leave shoes and slippers out before entering home

We might going to several palces including toilets in our offices. There are high chances your shoes might have viruses sticked under it. So it is better to leave them out.

6. Bathrooms were not built inside homes.

As you can see, they had 2 way entrances to their homes. One is through main entrance and other one will be through backside of your home. Mostly, bathrooms were built towards backside or atleast away from main living area. This helps to prevent spreading unwanted viruses.

7. They used cow dung and turmeric powder to clean their main entrance pathway. Why?

It is proven that cow dung and turmeric are natural virus killers. So they mix it up with water and clean the places.

Personal health, social health, interacting with strangers from a distance and keeping relationship in good way. Like this our culture has a lot of values in itself, but we have made it a teasing game.

Every culture has its own lifestyle according to their weather and locality. If we praise them and follow that lifestyle, we can have a healthy life and live safe.
